The Yukon presents unique challenges due to its vast area, remote communities, and severe weather conditions. Rivers and lakeshore areas are at risk of floods, while almost all regions are at risk of wildfires. Some locations may experience earthquakes or landslides and avalanches. Power failures during winter months, severe snow or ice storms and loss of critical infrastructure are all potential emergencies.

Being prepared for both natural and human-caused emergencies is crucial for protecting yourself and your family. Make sure you’re ready by putting together a home emergency kit with these ten essentials:

  1. Water: Store at least 4 litres of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
  2. Food: Keep a three-day supply of non-perishable food items that don’t require cooking, such as canned goods, energy bars, and dried fruits.
  3. Battery-Powered or Hand-Crank Radio: Essential for receiving weather alerts and updates on emergencies.
  4. Flashlight and Extra Batteries: Power outages are common during severe weather events. A reliable flashlight can help you navigate in the dark.
  5. First Aid Kit: Include basic first aid supplies to handle minor injuries and illnesses.
  6. Extra Clothing and Blankets: Prepare for the Yukon's cold temperatures by having warm clothing and blankets.
  7. Important Documents: Keep copies of important documents, such as identification, insurance policies, and family records, in a waterproof container.
  8. Multi-Tool or Swiss Army Knife: These tools can be incredibly useful in various situations, from preparing food to making repairs.
  9. Personal Hygiene Items: Include soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other personal hygiene products to maintain sanitation.
  10. Pet Supplies: If you have pets, don’t forget their food, water, and any medications they might need.

This kit should be tailored to the specific needs of your household, including medications, baby supplies, or any other special items you may require. Regularly check your kit to replace expired items and update it as your family's needs change. Being well-prepared can make a significant difference in your comfort and safety during and after an emergency.
